The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (2016) sequel recognized that its predecessor, the 2014 reboot, lacked the zany charm fans craved. The former punk and the latter brute are transformed into a warthog and a rhinoceros, respectively, and are flawlessly rendered in CGI. Amell’s take on the character, armed with a hockey stick and a wry attitude, adds another layer of street-level action and necessary grounding amidst the chaos of interdimensional portals and giant monsters. The plot centers on Shredder (now played by Brian Tee) and Krang seeking pieces of a device to bring the Technodrome to Earth. The set pieces are immense, featuring everything from a thrilling airplane sequence to a massive confrontation over the skies of Manhattan, ensuring this action-adventure is constantly moving.
