Final Review Score
Great
Twins (1988) is part of Louilink’s Arnold Schwarzenegger movie retrospective. This review considers its storytelling, performances, production, and lasting appeal.
Premise and Perspective
Twins pairs Arnold Schwarzenegger with Danny DeVito as Julius and Vincent Benedict, brothers separated at birth after an unusual genetic experiment. Julius grows up sheltered, educated, and physically imposing, while Vincent becomes a streetwise hustler. Their reunion turns the mismatch into a road comedy about family, trust, and discovering how much two apparently opposite people can share. Director Ivan Reitman builds the premise around the stars' contrasting screen personalities, letting the casting itself deliver the first joke.
Comedy and Chemistry
Schwarzenegger plays Julius with sincere politeness and wide-eyed curiosity, a refreshing departure from his usual action roles. DeVito supplies fast-talking cynicism and a willingness to bend the rules. The humor is strongest when neither brother fully understands the other's approach to life. Julius's innocence could easily become repetitive, but Schwarzenegger gives the character enough warmth to make his gradual education enjoyable. DeVito, meanwhile, finds flashes of insecurity beneath Vincent's schemes. Their growing affection gives the comedy a dependable emotional center.
Story and Supporting Cast
The plot takes the brothers through a string of discoveries and complications, mixing family revelations with criminal entanglements and romantic subplots. Kelly Preston and Chloe Webb add energy to the journey, although the movie remains firmly focused on its central pair. Some twists are convenient, and the larger conspiracy surrounding the brothers' origins is treated lightly. That looseness suits the film's genial tone, but it also means the story can feel like an excuse to move Schwarzenegger and DeVito into another amusing situation.
The Final Verdict
Twins is an amiable star-driven comedy whose biggest strength is the chemistry between its leads. It does not have the sharpest script or the most inventive plot, and some jokes are predictable. Still, the contrast between Julius's idealism and Vincent's opportunism creates genuine charm. The film marked an important expansion of Schwarzenegger's screen persona, showing that his imposing physique could be used for tenderness and comic surprise rather than only intimidation. It remains a pleasant, easygoing choice for viewers interested in his lighter work.
